Try as I might, I can’t get optical 5.1 out. At this point I’m not even sure it can be done and what I’m supposed to expect. The kexts and patches are all about multi-channel, but optical doesn’t figure much there and I think I might have had multi-channel to start with, since I have a whole bunch of functional 3.5mm outputs, but obviously they aren’t connected to any speakers since the receiver is handling the speakers. There is also the issue about the whole Dolby thing being supported on a per-player basis, at which point I’m not quite sure what in the chain isn’t playing along. A USB audio card like the Sound Blaster Omni 5.1 seems to be the solution to a lot of these issues, but I’m not sure I want to spend the money on that. For one, when I’m watching something from my bed, the rear speakers are more like side speakers, and as for gaming (when they actually are in the rear), Windows still seems to be the platform for most games, and it can handle the 5.1 optical then. Until things are different, I will just live with stereo and my receiver will take care of distributing to the speakers.
